Introduction

My name is Kerri Castro and I have just begun the process of becoming an elementary school teacher. While I am able to navigate my way around basic word, spreadsheet and internet programs, I am not very technologically savvy.  Because technology has become a integral part of most of our lives, increasing my knowledge of technology and practicing both old and new technological skills is critical to my being an effective teacher to my future students….so here I am in EDUC 422.  I met the technology requirement for this course by passing the computer proficiency exam when I first enrolled in classes at CSUSM.

I earned my Bachelor’s degree in English Literature and Writing at CSUSM in 2001 and I just finished my M.A. in English Literature and Writing last semester (Spring 2009).  To date, my teaching experience is somewhat limited.  I have home schooled my children and worked as a “Mom helper” in their classrooms when they were in a traditional school setting.  I am just beginning the process of acquiring my teaching credential, having been accepted in the multiple subject credential program for the Fall 2009 term.

I hope to gain a more in depth knowledge of technology and its use(s) in the classroom in this class so I can make my teaching (and my student’s learning) experience more productive and interesting.

  1. Hello Kerri! I definitely agree with you on the fact that computers have become an integral role in our everyday lives. Congratulations on completing you Masters in Arts, that’s awesome! I hope to get my Master’s Degree as well, I’m just not quite sure in what yet.

  2. Thanks! What did you study for your B.A.? Do you know what areas of study you may be interested in for an M.A.? It was a really fun and interesting experience.

  3. Kerri, I like these blogs because we all get to know a little bit about each other. I like the fact that you home schooled your kids and also that you just received your Masters degree. Congrats! I am happy that we are working together on the tricky wiki project...

  4. Kerri, that's a beautiful piece of artwork you have in the blog. Is that your own work?
With your literature and writing background I would expect to see an impeccable entry from you on our Wiki project!
    Good luck with your credential....

  5. Hi Kerri,
    Congrats on finishing you Masters.
Homeschooling your children must require a tremendous amount of patience and discipline---those qualities should suit you well in the classroom. My sister-in-law also homeschools her kids, and I've heard it's pretty challenging.
    Good luck in the class!

  7. I agree Jacob, it is nice to get to know more about the people we sit next to. I wasn't sure if I would like this whole blogging thing but it really does make our learning environment/experience more personal and interesting.

I am glad I am working with you guys on the Wiki project as well. See you on Monday!

  8. Hi Michael,

my postings are showing my technological deficiencies - I am not sure how to post in direct response to previous posts (maybe I can't).

Anyway, the artwork is not mine, I just thought it was pleasing. I hope I live up to your expectations on our project :-) Good luck to you as well!

  9. Hi Kerri,
Thanks for posting to my blog. The Apple has arrived, along with a free iTouch. What fun! I found myself reverting to the PC last week to get the homework done, but I'm starting to enjoy the Mac already.

Since I haven't applied or been accepted yet, I'm not in a cohort. What would my choices be? The earliest I could start is January if they are still taking mid-year students.

  10. To be honest, becoming a good teaching is a long process. 422 and your credential program are only one stage in the process.
